Steal His Style: Jamie Dornan

When it comes to commanding the silver screen, few actors do it better than Jamie Dornan. His roles in Marie Antoinette, Once Upon a Time and Fifty Shades of Grey have earned this Northern Irish actor a place in our hearts and in our DVD collections. There’s more to this man than good looks and great acting, however. Whether he’s on set or out on the town, he’s always impeccably dressed. In fact, he’s one of the most inspirational dressers of our generation. Men want to be him. Women want to be with him.

How’s he do it? He manages to combine some of the most basic clothing elements together in a way that feels anything but dated. Let’s get to know Dornan a little better and discuss what you can learn from his style.

Jamie Dornan: Early Life and Career

Jamie was born in Northern Ireland in Holywood, County Down. He spend most of his early life growing up in Belfast’s suburbs with his two sisters, Jessica and Liesa. His father is a gynaecologist and obstetrician. His mother passed away when he was only 16 from cancer. After graduating Methodist College Belfast, he attended Teesside University for a short period of time before deciding to quit school and more to London to become an actor.

He didn’t immediately hit it big. At the start of his career he was a model. Abercrombie & Fitch hired him in 2003, then he worked for a number of big-name clothing designers and retailers including Armani, Hugo Boss, Dior Homme and Calvin Klein. During some campaigns, he worked alongside other famous models like Eva Mendes and Kate Moss.

He finally caught his big break in 2006, when he landed his first acting role in Marie Antoinette, where he played Count Axel Fersen. He then went on to play in other films like Shadows in the Sun and Beyond the Rave. In 2011, he found himself in a mystical world of fairy tales when he played the role of Sheriff Graham in the television series Once Upon a Time. While his character was killed after only eight episodes, he reprised his role again, becoming a regular in the ABC series as the Hunstman.

After ending his role as the Hunstman, Dornan starred in a Northern Irish drama called The Fall. In 2013, the real magic began. He was chosen to replace Charlie Hunnam in the much anticipated film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey. He played the character Christian Grey, a man with a secret sexual life and an eye for only one woman. He is currently filming the second and third instalments of the movie, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed.

Personal Life

While he dated Keira Knightley for two year (2003-2005,) Dornan settled down with his now wife, Amelia Warner, in 2013. Amelia is an English actress and also a singer and songwriter. In late 2013, she gave birth to their first child, Dulcie. In 2016, their second child was born.

The Style of Jamie Dornan

Maybe it was those years of being a model that made Dornan the style icon he is today. Maybe he just naturally has a talent for putting together the perfect wardrobe. No matter what the reason, there are definitely some things we can learn from him. To learn these lessons, let’s take a look at one of his most recent Vanity Fair covers. On this cover he wears a relaxed suit jacket, dark jeans and grey knitwear.

  • Grooming- Before we even get to the suit, we need to first consider Dornan’s face. Whether on the cover of a magazine, on a film set or sipping Starbucks while enjoying an afternoon with his family, Dornan has mastered the art of grooming. It’s the key to his entire look, and it should be for yours as well. While a longer hair cut may not be in the works for you, take the time to take care of the hair you do have. Invest in some styling products that will make it look relaxed, but cool at the same time. As far as the beard goes, Dornan often opts for a thin layer of stubble. A full beard may come in handy on occasion, but it can also make you look like you simply don’t care. Thin stubble, cared for properly, will give you a rough, but ready look.

  • The Jacket- Whether you’re wearing a suit jacket, a tweed jacket or a blazer, the most important thing to learn from Jamie Dornan is to make sure you don’t look too over-styled. When dressing like this man, settle down on a neutral colour, like grey, charcoal, black or brown. Subtle is the key here. Once you’ve selected the colour you want for your men’s suit jacket or men’s tweed jacket, make sure it’s sharply tailored and fits like a glove.

  • Jeans- If you’re going to opt to wear jeans instead of chinos or suit trousers, it’s important to know what to buy and when to wear them. While you can occasionally get away with wearing them to an important event, like a photo shoot, for instance, you generally need to be famous in order to do so. For the rest of us, jeans are a casual go-to trouser. When buying them, look for options that are aged slightly, but don’t have any artificial distressing or rips in them. If you’re wearing them with a tweed jacket or blazer, consider the jacket’s silhouette as well. A blazer’s silhouette typically require slim-cut jeans.

  • Knitwear- Sweaters, polos and more can add colour and style to your ensemble. On the Vanity Fair cover, Dornan chooses a beautiful grey sweatshirt to go under his blazer. This gives the entire look a balance between casual and smart.
